Episode Guide Career Briefing

Episode Twenty Five - Hockey Player

Hockey PlayerThere are three basic kinds of players: forwards, defensemen, and goaltenders (goalies). Unless a team is shorthanded due to a penalty or overtime, each team will have six players on the ice during play. Three forwards line up at the front of the team, and they are (from left to right) the left wing, the center, and the right wing. Two defensemen line up behind them, one on the left and one on the right. The goalie is the sixth player. The forwards are responsible for most of the offense, and they tend to stay out front, while the defensemen are largely responsible for hanging back and making sure they are ready to protect the defensive zone.

The goalie rarely strays far from his crease, but he does skate out and pass pucks to the other players. If you like to skate, have access to an ice arena, begin by seeing if there are local junior teams. Hockey is the main sport of Canada.

Episode Twenty Five - Mayor

MayorA mayor of a city is usually an elected office.  When you decide on a career in public life, you will spend a period of time before ever seeing your name on a ballot.

The upside, though, is that the day may come when you have the power of elected officials. Go far enough and you may change the world. Before you enter the world of politics remember toread, read, read, and join student government. And if possible join a debate team. It will help you to learn how to think logically and become more articulate. And if national office is your goal , then major in political science and go to law school. Good luck to the future president.

Episode Twenty Six - Doctor (Internal Medicine)

Doctor of Internal MedicinePhysicians serve a fundamental role in our society and have an effect upon all our lives. They diagnose illnesses and prescribe and administer treatment for people suffering from injury or disease. Physicians examine patients, obtain medical histories, and order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests. They counsel patients on diet, hygiene, and preventive health care. Doctors practice general and family medicine, general internal medicine, or general pediatrics and are usually the first health professionals patients consult. Primary care physicians tend to see the same patients on a regular basis for preventive care and to treat a variety of ailments.

General and family practitioners emphasize comprehensive health care for patients of all ages and for the family as a group. Those in general internal medicine provide care mainly for adults who may have problems associated with the body's organs. It takes many years of education and training to become a physician: 4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of medical school, and 3 to 8 years of internship and residency, depending on the specialty selected. All States, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories license physicians. To be licensed, physicians must graduate from an accredited medical school, pass a licensing examination, and complete 1 to 7 years of graduate medical education

Episode Twenty Six - Sports Agent

Sports AgentA sports agent is just one career choice in the exciting and expansive area of sports. An agent's main responsibilities consist of negotiating contracts and finding endorsements for his or her clients. An agent must always have the interests of their client in mind, especially during negotiations. The contract can affect the client for years after it is signed. The agent's job does not end when the athletic career ends, many times the agent will be responsible for finding them work when the athletic careers are over. Another role of the agent is to make sure that all, or most, media attention is positive and beneficial to the athlete. The agent must also keep close ties with other businesses and companies. This information will allow the agent a direct line to those in charge of dispersing product endorsements. Networking is part of an agent's everyday life. Financial advising is becoming more and more important to the agent's job.

Many athletes acquire a lot of money, and many times they do not know what to do with it. Creating or finding tax shelters, investing money, and preparing for the athlete's retirement are all duties that agents routinely perform for their clients. Other miscellaneous duties of agents include such things as keeping their client happy. Involved in this is making the client know that their agent has only their best interests with all deals made in his name. This might even include making sure the family of the client has good seats to the sporting event. There are no set educational requirements for sports agents. But it is increasingly more difficult to find a job without a bachelor's degree in business administration, marketing, or sports management  After becoming an agent, pursuing a graduate degree in business or law is quite common. This will increase the chance for an agent's success. Obviously, contract law and economics courses are even better in helping an agent's future. Professional registrations are sometimes obtained to show their commitment and integrity to their job. They are not difficult to get; some must be obtained when dealing with players in a union in order to protect the members of that union.
