Episode Four - Sales Agent

Sales AgentA career in selling is a double-edged sword. On the plus side, a sales job is the gateway to the highest levels of earnings in most companies. On the negative side, your sales job is also filled with more stress and daily challenge than most any other.

Every where you turn there is a salesperson that is involved: From retail sales in stores to industrial sales of equipment or pharmaceuticals to doctors, sales agents are everywhere. You need to have great people skills and at least a high school diploma to enter this challenging, but rewarding field.

Episode Four - Veterinarian

VeterinarianMost people think of Veterinarians as physicians to the animal world. But at its core veterinary medicine is a science, and caring for the health of animals is only one part of what veterinarians do. Yes, veterinarians treat family pets and farm animals. However, they also research treatments for illness in both animals and humans, oversee food production to ensure its safety, and play a leading role in government public-health efforts. Companion Animal veterinarians care for family pets such as dogs and cats. Large Animal veterinarians treat cattle, sheep and swine (pigs).

They work with farmers and ranchers to ensure proper care of livestock. Some veterinarians focus their careers on a specialized area of practice, such as animals like rabbits or birds, which are termed "Exotic." Most veterinarians in the United States have graduated from one of the 31 Veterinary Medical Colleges in the United States and Canada.

Episode Five - Guitar Maker

Guitar MakerThere are no specific secondary educational requirements for musical instrument makers/repairers. However some training in metalwork, woodwork, technical drawing is preferred, and a basic knowledge of chemistry, math and art is also useful. Design technology and graphic design courses are recommended. Most of the top musical instrument makers such as violinmakers have trained in Europe, and many instrument makers prefer to employ graduates with a diploma from an accredited instrument making school.

Useful experience for musical instrument makers/repairers includes: woodworking, metalworking, welding and work as a musician or in a music store. Basic electronics knowledge helps with repairing electric guitars and other electric instruments. It\'s also helpful to keep abreast of new developments and keeping in touch with other makers enables you to change your methods, to be more efficient, or to be more creative.

Episode Five - Travel Agent

Travel AgentSome colleges offer four-year degrees in travel and tourism, while others have courses that relate to the industry. However, a college degree is not required to become a travel agent, although some employers prefer agents to have a background in computer science, geography, communications, or foreign languages. Courses in accounting and business management are also a wise investment, as most agents consider starting their own agencies. Six- to eight-week programs offered by community colleges and continuing education programs are comprehensive and are usually sufficient training for beginning travel agents. Some agents start as reservation clerks or receptionists in agencies, advance to office manager or other managerial positions, and eventually move on to become full-fledged agents.

Travel agents who wish to advance after a few years in the field can take advanced courses from the Institute of Certified Travel Agents, which lead to a certification as a Certified Travel Counselor. The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) offers a correspondence course as well. These certifications can be helpful for those wishing to start their own businesses. To start their own businesses, travel agents have to gain formal supplier or corporation approval (airlines, ship lines, and rail lines) before they are authorized to receive commissions. Although many travel agents receive "a rude awakening" when they find their hopes of "glamour and jet-setting" to have exceeded the reality of the job, others do not seem to mind the "evenings behind the desk," because they feel a "genuine obligation" to their clients.

As one respondent explains, "It is an ego boost to know that someone halfway around the world needs you." There are also perks in the job, like "discounted or free travel," although an agent\'s demanding schedule leaves "hardly any time to use all the free tickets."

Episode Six - Truck Driver

Truck DriverDo you like to travel and see the country? Long haul truck driving may be the answer for you. Although many old truck drivers didn't have much of an education, modern drivers are trained and tested. Most have at least a high school diploma and additional technical school training. According to the Federal Government Occupational Handbook there is a current demand for 500,000 truck drivers (light and heavy) nationwide. Trucks are used to deliver food supplies, oil and gas, clothing, materials to build homes, warehouses and factories.

Can you think of any industry more important to our way of life Today many opportunities exist in the trucking industry. You can choose from local, regional, or over the road driving jobs.

Episode Six - Horse Trainer

Horse TrainerHorse trainers supervise the preparation of horses for racing and trotting competitions, advise and consult with owners and direct stable staff and jockeys/drivers. Horse trainers feed, groom, exercise, bridle and saddle horses. They accustom horses to reins and harnesses and teach them to pull sulkies. Trainers sometimes teach riders horse riding techniques and horse handling methods. They can supervise and direct stable staff, jockeys, sulky drivers and other workers. Trainers plan, supervise and carry out training programs for horses and select race programs to achieve the best races for their horse. They attend race meetings or other horse-related events.

They must be in accordance with relevant laws and keep accurate records of accounts and use correct credit procedures. Horse trainers usually specialize in either thoroughbreds, quarter horses for galloping races, standard breeds for pacing or trotting races or performance horses for events such as show jumping and dressage. Horse trainers may be required to work long hours. Much of their work is carried out very early in the morning and they may continue to work all day. A keen interest in horses, patience, a liking for outdoor work and good communication skills are essential.

Paleontologists also frequently are involved in studies of evolutionary biology. The best starting point is a college preparatory program with as many science and math courses as possible.
